In 2024, an old Japanese camera company Pentax has just released the new half frame film camera, called "Pentax 17". The purpose of this plastic camera is in order to attract more young generation to enjoy the film world (アナログカメラの世界に入ってきた若い者皆さんが思いきり楽しめるようなカメラがコンセプトとなります, said by Mr. TKO). I am glad to receive a new body and try it before announcement.
For me, I never try the half frame film camera before, the reason is easy to know because it doesn’t suitable to shoot in high quality for commercial purpose. In 2024, if you still using film camera for your business, that means it is your selling point because you are using "film", but not "digital", such as a popular movie selling that they are using medium format to shoot the bomb explosion.
For the first impression of half frame film camera, most of people think that is a toys rather than full-frame even medium format in 21 century, but sometimes it is better than 135. Family members able to enjoy "at least" 72 pieces of pictures to make a record of their holiday trip or party, to shoot randomly, more fun, because they won’t be limited to just shooting 36 family portrait photos.
A normal day after work, I holding Pentax 17 with Fuji Superia 400 to take a photo walk in Victoria Harbor in Hong Kong. there are famous tourist attraction because people always want to make a closer relationship with the mysterious nature, with some interesting posts. For the next advantage of Half frame format, it is good for "author" create their own narrative story within two pictures via a unique scanning.
I found some interesting angles to take some photos with the special composition shot by Pentax 17. I can combine two pictures on the 135 format size when scanning. It make the photo narrative.
Actually that is not good performance in the cloudy day as same as that day I went. But it maybe the magic of the new coating of the lens in Pentax 17, I am surprise of the quality of them.
